Research Paper: Introduction, Body and Conclusion Requirements

A research paper generally has an introduction, body and conclusion sections. These sections have varying roles as follows.

The introduction

Not many people realize the importance of the introduction in their paper. The introduction does more than provide the idea or present the argument. They provide the context for the entire paper and offer it some support. The introduction is the chance of the writer to attract the attention of the reader. It should therefore not be vague but take a strong stance. This aspect should, however, be moderated such that the writer does not push away or antagonize the reader. It is important to put the topic in a larger context. The introduction should introduce a larger topic or problem, and then place the research subject in the context of the bigger problem.

The body

In the body of the research paper, the content should be supportive, strong and considerate. The paragraphs of the body should be in support of the thesis sentence. It develops the ideas brought forward by the topic sentence, elaborating them in a clear and concise manner. The points presented in the body must be clear and take a strong stand. They should not be vague or unclear. The writer must be cautious, though, and consider their audience. The way they present their arguments should not be offensive or push away the readers they target.

The body should provide enough evidence to support the idea being advanced. This means it should be long enough to completely convince the audience. The body content should not have too much evidence or be too repetitive. In some cases, the writer is forced to stretch the point. In instances like this, they must convince the reader that the stretch is worth taking. Another key characteristic is the arrangement. Arrangement determines how much the reader takes in and the impact of the message. The writer should decide which arrangement suits their message, be it chronological or logical. In addition to that, the writer should be coherent. This means arranging the ideas in an understandable way and as simple as possible. They must proof read their paper for mistakes, and maintain the same tone throughout the paper.

Conclusions are a condensation of the contents of the paper. In a conclusion, the writer should state whether the original purpose of the research was met. A conclusion relates the bigger picture solutions to the problems investigated in the study.
